Archon: The Light and the Dark for the Atari 5200 is a homebrew adaptation of the renowned strategy and action hybrid originally developed by Free Fall Associates for the Atari 8-bit computer series.

Although never officially released for the Atari 5200, this port preserves the core mechanics and strategic depth that made the original one of the most celebrated titles of early computer gaming.

Archon combines turn-based strategy with real-time combat, offering a unique gameplay experience that blends the structure of a board game with the intensity of action encounters. The game is played on a nine-by-nine grid where two opposing factions, the Light and the Dark, command armies of eighteen distinct units. Each piece has its own movement range, strengths, and combat abilities, encouraging tactical placement and thoughtful planning.

Victory can be achieved through multiple paths. Players may aim to occupy all five powerpoints on the board, eliminate every enemy unit, or capture and imprison the final remaining piece of the opposing side. These varied win conditions add layers of strategic flexibility, rewarding both aggressive and defensive playstyles.

A defining feature of Archon is its real-time battles. When two opposing units meet, the game shifts from the board to an action-oriented arena where the creatures fight directly.
