Buried Buck$: The Strategic Treasure-Hunting Challenge on the Atari 5200

Buried Buck$ (also known as Buried Bucks) is a retro action-strategy title originally created by A.N.A.L.O.G. Software and Tom Hudson, later converted as a homebrew release for the Atari 5200 by Good Deal Games.

The game places the player in control of a helicopter tasked with retrieving golden dollar-sign treasures hidden beneath the surface of the terrain.

To access each buried buck, players must drop bombs that dig through the ground, carving tunnels and openings that allow the helicopter to descend. Precision and timing are essential, as the terrain must be shaped strategically to reach the treasure while maintaining a safe escape route back to the base.

A constant threat comes from an enemy aircraft that patrols overhead. This plane drops large clods of dirt designed to refill the holes created by the player. These falling obstacles can trap or destroy the helicopter and may even re-bury treasure that has already been uncovered, forcing players to adapt quickly and rethink their approach.

Scoring is tied directly to treasure retrieval. Only one buck can be carried at a time, and each must be safely returned to the landing pad to earn points. If the helicopter is destroyed mid-transport, the buck is dropped and must be recovered again. This combination of arcade reflexes, risk management, and careful resource use has earned Buried Buck$ praise among retro gaming enthusiasts for its unique balance of action and strategy.
