Centipede on the Atari 5200: Gameplay, Features and Classic Arcade Mechanics

Centipede, developed and published by BAKTRA Software, is a retro platform game originally released for Atari 8-bit computers in 2007 and later adapted for the Atari 5200 console in 2015.

Drawing strong inspiration from the classic Manic Miner, the game delivers a refined single-screen platforming experience designed for players who enjoy precise timing, pattern recognition and high-difficulty retro challenges.

In Centipede, players navigate a “smiling head” character through a sequence of caves, each presenting unique layouts and escalating difficulty. The primary objective in every stage is to collect all diamonds scattered throughout the environment. Clearing all diamonds allows progression to the next cave, encouraging strategic route planning and careful movement.

The game features a range of hazards that require exact platforming skills. Contact with deadly objects, dangerous surfaces or falling from significant heights results in the loss of a life. These mechanics reflect the unforgiving style of early 1980s platformers, offering an experience that appeals to classic gaming enthusiasts.

A follow-up title, Curse of the Lost Miner, was released in 2015 and expanded upon the mechanics introduced in the original. Both titles hold a respected place in the modern homebrew community for faithfully capturing the spirit of vintage platform games while introducing fresh design elements for new and returning players.
