H.E.R.O.: Helicopter Emergency Rescue Operation

H.E.R.O.: Helicopter Emergency Rescue Operation is an action-adventure game developed by John Van Ryzin and published by Activision for the Atari 5200 home gaming console.

The game places players in the role of Roderick Hero, a specialized rescue operative tasked with saving miners trapped deep underground due to severe volcanic activity. The setting combines platforming, exploration, and combat within a hazardous mine environment.

Each mission takes place in a sprawling mineshaft filled with dangerous creatures, collapsing passages, and pools of lava. Players must navigate these environments efficiently, as Roderick Hero has a limited energy supply that continuously drains during exploration. Successfully locating and rescuing the miners before running out of energy is the primary objective of each level.

Roderick Hero is equipped with several tools that define the gameplay. His prop pack allows him to hover and fly, offering precise vertical and horizontal movement that is essential for navigating complex tunnels and avoiding hazards. His helmet-mounted microlaser can eliminate enemies such as bats, spiders, snakes, and other underground creatures, as well as break through certain obstacles when necessary.

Obstructions such as stone barriers and lava walls frequently block progress. Players begin each mission with a limited supply of dynamite, which can be used to clear these hazards quickly. Careful placement is required, as explosions can also harm the player. When dynamite runs out, the laser can still be used to destroy walls, but at the cost of additional time and energy.

As the game progresses, levels become longer and more maze-like, with increased enemy presence and more complex hazards. Lava walls and pools appear more frequently, requiring careful timing and precise control. H.E.R.O. is widely regarded as one of the standout titles on the Atari 5200, known for its refined controls, escalating challenge, and distinctive blend of action and exploration.
